Palma de Mallorca – Good weather all year round

Palma de Mallorca is a hidden treasure, from the sea to the mountains

If an island could have all the ingredients for coexistence, Palma de Mallorca would certainly be at the top of the most reproduced recipes. Good weather all year round, good cuisine, plenty of culture and plenty of shopping. When in doubt, do we try it?

Palma de Mallorca is the largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands. In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, it neighbors bohemian Ibiza and picturesque Menorca, with daily ferries to both islands.

For beach lovers, the Spanish island can be the ideal destination due to the variety of options, as there are beaches in various parts of the island: from Playa de Can Castilha, with its large bay, perfect for those who venture into water destinations , from surfing to kiting; in Porto Cristo you will find a small paradise, further away from the major tourist attractions, and the perfect place to dive into crystal clear waters and to update your Instagram feed with views that would make any traveler jealous.

For those who enjoy a little dancing, the bars on the shore of Playa de Can Castilla are a good option for those looking for a moment of relaxation. As a beautiful Spanish resort, multiculturalism is a constant both when it comes to tourists and gastronomic choices, if paella or tortillas aren’t to your liking.

Palma de Mallorca is a hidden treasure, from the sea to the mountains. One of the unmissable activities is exploring the picturesque village of Sóller. Lost in the middle of the Tramuntana mountain range, Sóller is a village full of history and flavors, and the important thing is the path to get there, as the ride takes place on a wooden train, the famous Tren de Sóller. The train was opened in 1912 and is much more than a tourist attraction: in addition to being used as a means of public transport used by the inhabitants of the small city of Palma, some freight carriages were also placed there that would be used to transport merchandise.

The train, entirely made of wood, became a masterpiece of engineering capable of overcoming a difference in level of almost 200 meters on a journey of 27 kilometers, crossing bridges, tunnels, impossible curves and everything that, at the time, seemed impossible. Currently, it is one of the most unexpected walks on the island, especially because after crossing all that nature you will find a port and a beach surrounded by mountains. Therefore, don’t forget to take your bathing suit for late dives.

Completing the list of attractions of Palma de Mallorca is the local culture: from ceramics, to the various straw objects to the new wave of national artists who reinterpret the wonders of the island through art deco influences and create digital paintings and illustrations.

▶ What to do:

In addition to being able to enjoy the countless beaches, Palma de Mallorca offers several outdoor activities that promise a very pleasant stay. From bicycle rides through Serra Tramutana, to boat trips, as well as cultural visits to the Miró Foundation.

▶ Where to stay:

A safe option is to choose a hotel next to the beach. If you choose the Hotel Java, for example, you will pay around 70 dollars per night with breakfast. The great advantage of this type of accommodation is that it is located next to the beach and the hotel has several amenities, if you are traveling with family. As Palma de Mallorca has a very good transport network, you can easily travel around the island, with each trip costing €2.

▶ Where to eat:

This is possibly the easiest section to develop about the Spanish island. In addition to the typical tapas, Palma de Mallorca offers a wide range of gastronomic options. On the other hand, you have to try Mallorca’s typical sweet: ensaimadas. Ensaimada is a typical sweet from the Balearic Islands. It is much appreciated by tourists and locals and, although its origins are relatively unknown, it is known that its recipe was first documented in the 17th century and that its name comes from the Mallorcan word “saim”, which means lard. — one of its main ingredients.

▶ How to get there:

There are several options here, all of them with at least 2 scales. If you choose Qatar Airways, you will leave Maputo for Doha and then Madrid; If you prefer the Angolan company Taag, the stops will be in Luanda and Madrid. My suggestion is that in Madrid you choose to fly on one of the Spanish low cost flights as at Barajas Airport you can find daily flights to the Balearics. Then, in the Mallorcan sun, just take one of the buses to the center of the island and enjoy.
