There, there are no locks or bolts. There are glass doors that slide open on a wooden balcony facing the sea.
There, there are no locks or bolts. There are glass doors that slide open on a wooden balcony facing the sea. There is a breeze that runs and turns the hot summer nights into an invitation to contemplation. There is a firmament covered with generations and generations of stars.
Iz-Ma-An Lodge challenges us to be trusting. In a world that has accustomed us to always look over our shoulder, the small hotel built on top of a dune, in Pomene, has a policy of leaving everything unlocked. It is impossible not to be touched by the spirit of freedom that reigns there.
The village of Pomene is located within the smallest conservation area in the country, in the province of Inhambane. There, the mornings are long and invite leisurely strolls on the vast and deserted beach. The late after- noon is a good time to go down to the bar, where fresh fish and a custom cocktail are prepared.
The lodge has four double rooms, each with a private bathroom, and a shared kitchen with an outdoor braai area. With direct access to the beach, it has a support bar and a pergola where meals are served to order.
▶ HOW TO GO
Fly with LAM to Inhambane or Vilanculos. From there, take the National Road to Massinga and follow the signs to Pomene. From this point on, the use of a 4×4 is essential. Arriving at the village of Rio das Pedras, take the right towards Pomene Reserve, on the south bank. From Massinga to the Reserve, it is 65 km.
▶ WHERE TO EAT
Pomene is worth a multiple- day visit and the program doesn’t end at the beach. In addition to nautical activities, including diving or kitesurfing, a visit to the ruins of the Old Hotel is recommended. The reserve has several paths that can be explored. The luxurious and once popular Pomene Lodge was purchased by the MSC cruise company, being reserved for its customers.
▶ WHAT TO DO
With a deserted beach at your disposal, you can walk by the sea for hours until you get tired. Nature walks are also possible on the resort property. Depending on the time of year, you may be lucky enough to spot migrating whales (July to November) or nesting turtles (October to March).
